General information of School of Life Sciences,
Guangzhou University
The School of Life Sciences (SLS) was founded in July 2005. It developed from the Department of Biology of Guangzhou Normal University and the Department of Biology of Guangzhou Institute of Education which were merged into the School of Biological and Chemical Engineering in 2000 and later became two independent schools. SLS offers three undergraduate programs including Biological Sciences, Biotechnology and Biological Engineering. Our school has three master programs including Master in Biology, Master of Education in Biology and Master of Engineering in Biochemistry. There are over 800 on-campus students including more 100 postgraduates.
1 Faculty and Staff
There are 86 faculties and staffs including 59 Ph.D. holders. Among the 65 full-time faculties, 22 of them are professors, 25, associate professors, 8, postdoctoral co-supervisors, 8, Ph.D. supervisors and 36, master supervisors; 28 of them have the experience of studying / working abroad. SLS boasts of 1 winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 distinguished Research Fellow of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and 2 members of the CAS Pioneer Hundred Talents Program; 10 teachers are the members of “Guangdong Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talent Program”, 1 teacher has been selected as a candidate of the Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Young Teacher Training Program for Universities, 3 teachers were elected as the members of national academic societies, 2 teachers are vice-director and more than 10 are members of provincial academic societies. Over 10 teachers are members in editorial boards of scientific journals including J Genet Genomics. Two teachers are awarded as Prestigious Teacher of Guangzhou University and 8 are awarded with Excellent Teachers in Guangdong Province or in Guangzhou City.
2 Discipline Construction
SLS has a Key Discipline of Bioengineering of Guangzhou City, a Municipal Key Laboratory of Functional Study on Plant Stress-Resistant Genes, 2 key laboratories of Guangzhou University including Laboratory of Gene Function and Microarray and Laboratory of Research on South China Biodiversity.
The Master in Biology Program includes Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology etc. Our school also has 3 key disciplines of Guangzhou University: Botany, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Botany and Zoology are the key ESI Discipline of the university.
The major of Bioengineering is a provincial pilot project of comprehensive reforms on majors, and the major of Biological Sciences and Biological Engineering are the characteristic majors of Guangzhou University. Zoology is the municipal top-quality course in Guangzhou City
The Biological Science and Technology Experimental Teaching Center is a Provincial Experimental Teaching Center. The total area of the laboratory is more than 10, 000 m2. The total assets of the equipment are 130 million yuan, and there is also a Biological Garden and a Pilot Workshop for Bioengineering.
Dayawan Bay Zoology Practice Teaching Base is a Provincial Undergraduate Practice Teaching Base. SLS has 2 practice-teaching bases for Postgraduates, one is the Guangdong Insect Institutes, another is the Academies of Agricultural Sciences of Guangzhou. In addition, SLS possesses 17 practice bases in Guangzhou.
4 Scientific Research
SLS cooperated with Department of Education of Guangdong Province to establish two key research platforms for international cooperation (Guangzhou University International Cooperation Research Center for Plant Stress Resistance and Guangzhou University–Keele University (UK) Research Center for Gene Interference and Application), and other research institutions including Guangzhou University Molecular Genetics And Evolutional Innovation Research Center, Precision Gene Editing Engineering Center, Bioengineering Institute and South China Institute of Biodiversity.
SLS also established several research teams in the fields of Soybean Molecular Design Breeding, Key Gene Function Research and Application, Plant Stress Biology and Molecular Breeding, Animal Taxonomy and Diversity Conservation, Plant Ecology and Diversity Conservation, Molecular Physiology and Endocrinology, Development and Utilization of Important Biological Resources in South China.
In recent 5 years, this school has undertaken more 100 research projects and the research fund have reached 40 million RMB. Among all the research projects there are nearly 30 national projects and more than 20 provincial projects. More than 300 articles have been published and about 100 of them were indexed by SCI. Eight monographs and textbooks were published. SLS has obtained 6 provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, as 6 teaching achievement prize and more than 10 authorized invention patents.
